What is a proxy?

A proxy is a webserver that gets webpages and sends them to you rather than having the web pages being sent directly from the website to you. What's the point of that, you might ask? Well this saves your privacy because this way the website you are visiting never knows who you are (through your IP address or otherwise). More importantly, many schools and workplaces (as you no doubt have noticed) block websites such as MySpace, Bebo, YouTube , and others.
